The Street Team middle schoolers return to test the new problem posing feature in the AnimalWatch tutorial for pre-algebra, under the direction of graduate student Mike Birch.

(09/03/2007) - National Science Foundation grant adapt AnimalWatch for blind students
The K12@USC project has received a grant from the Research on Disabilities Education program to adapt the AnimalWatch online tutorial for pre-algebra for use by blind middle and high school students. We partner with the Los Angeles Unified School District program for students with visual impairments.

Middle school students visit the USC Information Sciences Institute to test new features in the AnimalWatch online tutorial for pre-algebra.

(07/09/2007) - AIED 2007 Conference in Marina del Rey
The K12@USC project made two paper and two poster presentations at the AIED meeting July 9-13, 2007. One paper by Beal, Mitra and Cohen on the use of Hidden Markov Models to model student engagement was nominated as a finalist for the Best Paper award.

(04/09/2007) - Wayang Outpost at Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School
Juniors in the STAR 1 program at Bravo Medical Magnet worked with the Wayang Outpost tutoring system as part of their SAT-Math preparation.

(01/05/2007) - Colloquium at IIIT Hyerabad India
During a trip to the IJCAI conference, Carole Beal gave a colloquium at IIIT-Hyderbad to researchers, faculty and students of the MSIT program, focusing on the potential of intelligent tutoring systems to improve math and science achievement for students in India, as well as the United States.

(12/05/2006) - Technology & Education corporate briefing
The K12@USC team met with representatives of companies interested in improving education, including AT&T, IBM and Hewlett-Packard. We reviewed our technology-based interventions for mathematics learning now in use in a number of Southern California schools, including several Green Dot Public Schools in the downtown Los Angeles area.

(11/29/2006) - AnimalWatch mathematics software @ Animo Ralph Bunche
Grade 9 students at Animo Ralphe Bunche, a newly-opened Green Dot Public School located in downtown Los Angeles, began working with the AnimalWatch software this week. Students completed assessments at their laptops, and will begin tutorials next week.

Middle school students in the Upward Bound Summer program at California State University in Los Angeles will use the new Animal Watch pre-algebra program as part of their mathematics instruction during July and August.

K12@USC presented a technical research paper at the 21st National Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Boston, July 16-20 (AAAI-06) focusing on how student motivation predicts learning strategies while using the Wayang Outpost tutoring system.

(05/01/2006) - GreenDot students improve math skills with online tutorial
K12@USC released a report indicating that after working with the AnimalWatch tutorial, GreenDot students showed significant increases in pre-algebra skills.

(03/13/2006) - After-school SAT review program at Animo Inglewood high school
Animo Inglewood High School students completed a 6 week after-school program working with Wayang Outpost in preparation for the SAT-Math exam.

(10/14/2005) - Bravo Study, LAUSD
Eight week study at Franciso Bravo Medical Magnet School, LAUSD with full peer chat deployment. Students showed average improvement in pre- to post-test scores of about 20%.

Carole Beal served as program chair of the Division C Technology Research Track for the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association, held in San Francisco April 7 - 11 2006.

First evaluation at Pasadena High School, Pasadena, CA. 60 geometry students worked through pre-tests and SAT problems with reflection and mood reporting.
